Just A Shade Obsessed|

That's the title of just ONE of the great programs at the Carder Steuben Symposium this year. Members Cheryl and Chris Dartt plan to share their Steuben shade collection with you!
Over twenty years ago Cheryl and Chris purchased their first Steuben lamp shade. They could not have predicted that this one piece would lead to an over two-decades-long (healthy?) obsession with shades. The Dartts will share photos of their collection of Steuben shades and will discuss colors, decorations, and shapes. Theyll also share stories of their journey and how they ended up acquiring far too many to fit into cabinets. (But we always have room for juuust one more, right?)
Chris and Cheryl Dartt met in graduate school at Caltech where both completed their doctorates in Chemical Engineering. However, neither ended up working in this field. Chris is a high school chemistry teacher and Cheryl works in internet technology, though both are recently retired. The Dartts first became interested in Steuben glass on a trip to New York City in 1996 when they were just dating. A serendipitous visit to Gumps department store in San Francisco led them to their first piece of antique Steuben and the rest is history -- they have now been collecting Steuben for nearly 25 years. They currently reside in Eugene, Oregon
What's In A Name?
While I understand the addition of Glass to the club name, I see no advantages to renaming it Steuben Glass Association Inc. I would propose Steuben Glass Collectors Association Inc. or Steuben Glass Collectors Club Inc. The inclusion of collectors gives a much clearer sense of what we are and expands the keywords that a potential collector might be searching for i.e. Steuben glass collectors groups.
Another point of view on the name from an anonymous member
The name Carder Steuben Club is dated/old fashioned. There is a reason why there is no L.C. Tiffany Club or Wendell Castle Club, et. al. Can you think of any other serious arts organization with "Club" in its title?
With a simple name change the Carder Steuben Club would be well on its way to becoming part of the present instead of remaining a relic from the past. The designation "Club" is a downer! The difference between elegant and tacky is vast. The word "Club" is tacky and dated.
